Founded in 1988 by physician Wallace Calvin Abbott, Abbott Park, Illinois-based Abbott Laboratories manufactures and sells products in the therapeutic areas of cardiovascular, diabetes, diagnostics, neuromodulation, nutrition and children's formula, and branded generic pharmaceuticals. Abbott Labs is a market leader in the blood screening, adult and pediatric nutrition, left ventricular assist devices, remote heart failure monitoring, and points–of–care testing. Abbott Labs' well-known products include Similac, PediaSure, Pedialyte, Brufen, Klacid, Alinity, Ensure, FreeStyle, i-Stat, and MitraClip. In 2013, Abbott Labs spun off its research-based pharmaceuticals business that would be named AbbVie.
